What’s Your Big Idea?

billboards

What I’m actually talking about is large format advertising often called outdoor media, or environmental design. The most common form of this design would be for billboards.

When designing at such a large scale you have many things that you need to consider for your brand. Here is some advice to keep in mind when planning your big idea.

TYPOGRAPHY

It is important that you select the right fonts and the the contrast in the colour from the design is strong enough for legibility. Any font that is too busy is going to be difficult to read as well as the weight of the font. The letters of thin fonts can vanish from such a distance. Even fonts that are bold, you have to make sure that the letters are spaced far enough apart or they may appear to merge as blobs from a distance.

COLOUR

As mentioned above, colour plays a very important role in large scale designs. Greater contrast increases legibility. For example; if you use red and green as colours they may have a strong difference in their hue but the value of the colours are very close and does not create a strong contrast.

DISTANCE

One thing to keep in mind is that most of the viewing audience is going to be traveling past your advertisement and they only have a few seconds for it to register. You have to ensure that your message can hit home from any distance. Think about how the design will look when you are very far away and also when you travel past it.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Since your audience only has a few seconds for your message to reach them it is always best to keep things simple and clear. This does not mean you have to be boring or completely minimalist, you just have to think smart with your creative idea to convey the message.
